Steel has been manufactured and machined since the mid-18th century at the beautiful location alongside the Svartån river where Ovako’s production facility is now located. Today’s modern operations are part of the SmeBox business unit, which includes the rolling mills and processing plant in Boxholm and Ovako’s steel mill in Smedjebacken. The steel mill provides the daily deliveries of steel to Boxholm.

The strong competitiveness of this business area stems largely from a transformation of the operations over the past 20 years, from a mill producing ordinary steel into a producer of special steel.

SmeBox is the only Ovako business unit to produce flat bar, which accounts for half of the company’s bar manufacturing. The medium rolling mill produces flat products and profiles, while the fine rolling mill produces both flat and round bar. Micro-alloyed steel, spring steel and steel with high wear resistance make up a large proportion of the bar produced every year.

The processing plant means that Ovako’s customers are able to obtain steel grades tailored to their businesses and requests, whether these are the rail and agricultural segments or the automotive industry.
