The use of clean steel is known to oﬀer a dramatic improvement in the fatigue life of critical components. This is due mainly to the precise engineering of the inclusions that initiate fatigue failures. Therefore, to have confidence that a clean steel will perform as expected it is vital to quantify both the size and statistical dispersion of the inclusions present.
